The website HowLongtoBeat collects game completion times and averages them to discover about how long it should take to beat a particular game. Assuming the website’s data is accurate, the new God of War is potentially longer than the first three games combined, with up to 35 hours of playtime compared to the 31 hours it takes on average to play through the entire trilogy.
Here are the average playtimes for each God of War game, according to How Long to Beat:
God of War (2005) - 9 hours God of War 2 - 12 hours God of War 3 - 10 hours God of War: Chains of Olympus - 5. 5 hours God of War: Ghost of Sparta - 6. 5 hours God of War: Ascension - 8. 5 hours
As expected, the PSP God of War games, Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, are the shortest games in the series. The home console entries all take roughly the same amount of time to complete, between 8 and 12 hours. For completionists, it seems as though God of War 3 provides the meatiest experience out of any God of War title released so far, averaging 17 hours to complete it fully and earn its platinum trophy.
However, it’s worth noting that it’s unclear if Barlog was referring to the time it takes to play through God of War’s story alone, or if he was including side content as well. We know that the new God of War, while not an open world game, will have plenty of side areas for Kratos and his son to explore, with the latest footage revealed at the PlayStation Experience apparently representative of that.
Unless Barlog offers some clarification, fans will have to wait until the new God of War releases to learn more about how long it takes to play through all its content. Regardless, it’s clear that the game will still be the longest God of War game to date, and by a considerable margin if we go by HowLongtoBeat’s stats.
God of War will be available in 2018, exclusively for PlayStation 4.
